There are a number of questions that applicants and potential applicants for disability benefits ask when their condition is of a mental nature: Can I apply for disability for a mental condition? Are there certain mental conditions that you can apply for? Are there mental conditions that you can’t get approved for? Do I need to be seeing a psychiatrist to get approved with a mental condition? Can I get approved for disability with a mental condition if I am not taking medication? What if I am supposed to take medication but don’t have insurance and can’t afford it---how will this affect my case? You can apply for Social Security disability for any mental condition. Social Security does not necessarily regard your diagnosis as the determining factor of your entitlement to disability. Social Security disability has its basis in functionality. Social Security considers any mental condition that has left you unable to work at a substantial level for twelve months or makes you unable to work for twelve months to be a severe impairment. When applying for disability based on a mental condition, your disability claim’s chance of approval is improved if you have psychiatric treatment and you are compliant with your medication. However, this does not mean that your disability claim will denied because you cannot afford medication or you are not seeing a psychiatrist. If you do not have a psychiatrist, Social Security will send you to a consultative examination to determine the severity of your mental condition, and although these physicians only see you one time, sometimes that one time is all that is needed to receive an approval for disability.
