In all likelihood, you won't be able to tell yourself. However, if you have a disability (and this disability can be nearly any condition as long as the condition is A. severe and B. significantly limits you) and your disability has made it impossible to work, or has made it difficult for you to work enough to actually support yourself, you should probably consider putting in an application for disability benefits with the social security administration. Submitting a disability application to SSA is generally not something you should procrastinate on. For one thing, the wait for a decision on an application can be very long, and the wait for a disability hearing (if you get denied at the first two levels of the system, you will need to request a hearing) can be significantly longer. Secondly, many claimants who apply for disability actually find that their condition worsens while they wait for their disability case to be resolved. Unfortunately, too many individuals make the assumption that their condition will not be severe enough to qualify for disability benefits. However, very often, this assumption is incorrect. To be approved for social security disability or SSI you must be totally disabled, according to how the social security administration views the concept of disability. However, this does not mean that you have to be wheelchair-bound to qualify for disability. It simply means that your condition must be severe enough that you are unable to perform the work you have done in the past, and that, based on your age, education, transferrable work skills, and the extent to which your condition limits you, you are unable to switch to another type of work.
