Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal disorder that is part of the inflammatory bowel disease family.
Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome include recurrent abdominal pain and diarrhea, alternating with periods of constipation. Those diagnosed with this condition may find that the symptoms worsen over time. Irritable bowel syndrome does not cause permanent harm to the intestines, yet it can be a source of ongoing emotional and financial distress. In addition to physical discomfort, IBS patients often report that it prevents them from engaging in recreational and social activities, and makes keeping a steady work routine more difficult and stressful. Irritable Bowel Syndrome can be difficult to diagnose. A survey conducted by the Society for Women’s Health Research found that IBS could take 3 years and consultations with as many as four doctors before the condition is successfully identified. Irritable Bowel Syndrome affects tens of millions of people worldwide; it is estimated that at least 20 percent of all gastro-related doctor visits may be due to IBS symptoms. However, three-fourths of IBS patients are women. IBS can be a longstanding condition. One survey reports that one-third of IBS sufferers have had the condition for 11 years or more. Although the cause of IBS has not been determined, many patients report that their irritable bowel symptoms began at a time when they were experiencing significant amounts of stress and anxiety. |
