A back fusion (spinal fusion) is a surgical procedure which is used to combine and reinforce vertebrae (the joints of the back). Back fusions are usually performed in the lumbar area of the spine, though a fusion may also be performed on thoracic and cervical vertebrae as well. The surgical procedure employed in a fusion is designed to limit the mobility of certain vertebrae, thus relieving the pain that is caused by their movement. Back fusion procedures use supplemental bone grafts in combination with the body’s natural bone producing process to immobilize the vertebrae. Conditions for which back fusions are most affective are degenerative disc disease, discogenic pain, fractures of the vertebrae, spinal tumors, spondylosis, scoliosis, and other degenerative conditions of the spine.
