SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY, SSI FOR LYME DISEASE

Can you get ssd ssi disability for lyme disease?

Lyme disease is a multifaceted disorder whose origin seems to lie with the transmission of a specific bacterium via tick bite. It is a condition that can exacerbate and remiss, i.e. get better and worse over time and its affect on an individual can be pronounced.

Generally, lyme disease results in decreased energy levels and chronic fatigue levels. However, lyme disease can also lead to certain neurological, musculoskeletal, and cardiac deficits which are debilitating in their own right.

If treatment is not received in the early stages of Lyme disease, an individual may develop a more chronic form of the disease, which is difficult to treat. However, as many as twenty percent of individuals who have been infected do not realize they have been bitten by a tick, and so diagnosing Lyme disease is difficult, because the disease has so many symptoms that are associated with other conditions.

More severe case of Lyme disease may trigger autoimmune disorders that continue to affect an individual even if the Lyme disease is cured, and some individuals may never be free of the infection. In fact, individuals who have late stage Lyme disease may have experience a level of disability equal to an individual who has congestive heart disease, or even death.

Can you apply for and be awarded disability benefits based on lyme disease? The answer, of course, is yes.

Lyme disease is actually a perfect example of how the disability process works. Since the effects of this condition may entail a number of different body systems, whether or not a lyme disease patient is awarded benefits will generally depend on the extent to which they are limited (regarding their ability to engage in normal activities).
