Understanding how the Social Security Disability system works can make the difference between winning or not winning the ssd and ssi benefits and backpay to which a person is entitled. |

How long do social security disability or ssi benefits last? Unfortunately, there is no concrete answer to this very commonly asked question.
But, it can be said that once a person has been approved for disability or ssi based on disability, it is very difficult for Social Security (more specifically, a DDS disability examiner who has been assigned to review the case) to take them off their benefits. Social Security disability and ssi benefit recipients periodically have their cases reviewed every so often to determine whether or not their condition still qualifies them for disability payments. This review is known as a CDR, or continuing disability review. A CDR will generally occur every three or seven years, and, in rare cases, such reviews are conducted once a year (this usually only occurs if a claimant's condition meets the social security administration's disability criteria but also looks as though improvement can be expected at some point in the near future). However, as long as a Claimant's medical records do not show medical improvement, their disability status---and the payment of benefits----will be continued. And, most often, this is the case.
