Fibromyalgia is a musculoskeletal disorder characterized by the following chief complaints: stiffness and tender points occurring in the muscles, particularly in the morning and particularly affecting the muscles of the neck, spine, shoulders, and hips; generalized pain; considerable fatigue; difficulty with sleep; and other symptoms including anxiety and gastrointestinal distress.
Also known as fibrositis, fibromyositis, and related to the condition known as chronic myofascial pain or myofascial pain syndrome, fibromyalgia is a chronic medical condition for which the etiology is not entirely clear. Fibromyalgia patients are often seen by rheumatologists. However, though the condition is often classified among rheumatoid disorders, it does not seem to involve joint destruction or deformation. Fibromyalgia is also occasionally mistaken for lupus and seems to intersect with disorders such as chronic fatigue. And, in fact, the great majority of fibromyalgia patients are plagued with continual symptoms of fatigue. Recent medical evidence, though, suggests that fibromyalgia may be caused by inadequate amounts of deep-level, delta-wave sleep (possibly caused by sleep apnea disturbances) which is necessary for the body to physically repair. Without sufficient delta-wave sleep, fibromyalgia sufferers may be experiencing pain as a result of inadequate bodily regeneration each night. Because fibromyalgia involves fatigue, pain, sleep disturbance, and a host of other symptoms, the prescription drugs available at pharmacies for the treatment of the condition include medications typically prescribed for a wide range of other physical and psychiatric illnesses.
