Approximately 21 million individuals have osteoarthritis in the United States. Individuals with osteoarthritis account for one fourth of all primary physician visits and half of non –steroidal anti-inflammatory medications are prescribed for osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis seems to be associated with older individuals. Usually by the age of 65, approximately 80% of the general population will have radiographic evidence of the disease, although only 60% of those individuals will be symptomatic.
