HOW TO GET UPDATES ON A SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY CASE

HOW TO - THREE

This information may help claimants with representation, as well as those who are not represented by an attorney or non attorney representative. Understanding how the Social Security Disability system works can make the difference between winning or not winning the ssdi benefits and backpay to which a person is entitled. To win a claim for ongoing and past due ssd or ssi benefits, claimants should learn as much as possible about the social security disability approval system to improve the odds and chances of winning a claim and being approved for benefit receipt.
Updates on a Social Security Disability (also known as ssd, ssdi, rsdi, and title II benefits) or ssi case can be obtained by calling the Social Security Claims Rep assigned to the case, or the DDS Examiner assigned to the case (After a disability application has been taken by a claims rep, the claimant's file is sent to the state agency responsible for rendering medical determinations of eligibility. In most states, this state agency is known as DDS, or Disability Determination Services).

In most instances, the more practical person to contact will be the Disability Examiner at Disability Determination Services.

This is simply because, while Claims Representatives take the disability application, the medical evaluation and determination of eligibility is handled by the Disability Examiner.

Unlike contacting the Social Security Office, getting through on the phone to DDS is usually fairly simple. Simply call the DDS number (the number can be obtained from the social security office) and ask to speak to the disability Examiner assigned to the case.

At most DDS offices, the examiner working on a particular social security disability or ssi disability case can be identified by providing a claimant's social security number.

Claimants who have representation, however, should allow their disability attorney or non attorney representative to do this legwork on their behalf. This, of course, serves a dual purpose:

1. keeping one's representation fully up-to-date, and

2. ensuring that case-related issues are properly and professionally dealt with.
