The great majority of people with fibromyalgia complain of painful muscle stiffness (between 70% to 80% of FMS patients have this complaint) that usually begins and ends in the morning but which can sometimes last for hours.
Similar in intensity to the discomfort felt by arthritis sufferers, this stiffness occurs in muscles, connective tissue such as tendons and ligaments, and also in various joints. Typically, the stiffness felt by fibromyalgia patients is localized in the extremities (hands, feet, arms, and legs) and in the lumbar, thoracic, and cervical regions of the back. Despite the similarities to arthritic complaints, however, neither fibromyalgia nor the pain and stiffness associated with it, involve any sort of degenerative joint or tissue changes. |
