There are two types of Addison’s Disease: primary adrenal insufficiency which is the result of adrenal malfunction and secondary adrenal insufficiency which occurs when the pituitary gland does not stimulate the adrenal gland to produce enough adrenal hormones. Most cases of Addison’s Disease are the result of an autoimmune response in the body that causes autoantibodies to destroy the cells within the adrenal glands that are responsible for cortisol and aldosterone production. Individual’s with Addison’s Disease may have a crisis which might involve unexpected extreme back, abdomen, and leg pain, severe diarrhea and vomiting, loss of consciousness, or hyperglycemia. An Addison’s Disease crisis may require hospitalization or even be fatal. Generally, individuals who Addison’s Disease have episodes that are much less severe and are controllable with proper treatment without hospitalization. Most often individuals with Addison’s Disease will be treated with a cortisol replacement such as corticosteroid. Individuals who are in crisis may require intravenous cortisone treatment. Cortisone replacement will be required for life, also daily cortisone replacement will have to augmented for injury, infections, surgery, and during stressful periods.
