Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that results from a compression of the medial nerve in the wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome affects women more often than males. Symptoms may include burning or tingling in the fingers, difficulties gripping objects, numbness and weakness in the hand. There is no known cause for carpal tunnel syndrome, although there appears to be a correlation to repetitive use of the hand. However, there are also studies that indicate a correlation to underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, obesity, hypothyroidism, and osteoarthritis. Treatment options for individuals with carpal tunnel syndrome may include orthopedic braces for the wrist, cortisone injections, non-steroidal inflammatory and oral steroids, and a surgical procedure known as carpal tunnel release.
