Hydrocephalus is a disorder caused by the blockage of cerebral spinal fluid, or by excess production of spinal fluid (which occurs once in every five hundred births in the United States). The accumulation of fluid in the cranium usually results in brain compression; consequently, hydrocephalus is often associated with brain damage, learning disabilities, and lower than normal IQs. Additionally, the head is usually large and may require special support to prevent damage to the spinal cord. Approximately fifty percent of those individuals with hydrocephalus attend regular schools and score above 80 on standard IQ testing. The only known treatment for hydrocephalus involves implanting a shunt to drain the excess fluid. Unfortunately, shunts often fail or become blocked and need replacement.
