Avascular necrosis (also known by the terms osteonecrosis and aseptic bone necrosis and by the term ischemic bone necrosis) is a condition that results from reduced blood flow to bone tissue. The bone tissue dies from lack of blood (necrosis is defined as tissue death), which actually causes the bone to collapse. Although avascular necrosis can affect any bone, it usually affects longer bones such as the primary leg bone, the femur. Avascular necrosis most often affects the end of the bone near the joint area, which may result in the collapse of the joint surface as well. What causes this impairment? Avascular necrosis may be caused by trauma, decompression sickness, vascular compression, high blood pressure, vasculitis, and even radiotherapy. Treatment of avascular necrosis has traditionally necessitated complete replacement of the affected joint. However, newer therapies may only involve replacing the head of the bone.
