Lupus erythematosus, or simply lupus, is a chronic and inflammatory type of autoimmune rheumatic disease. Generally, lupus affects connective tissue; however, in some individuals lupus may affect the skin, as well as various joints and internal organs, such as the kidneys, heart, and lungs. Those who suffer with lupus may be affected in widely varying levels and the disease itself is noted for alternating periods of remission as well as flares that exacerbate its symptoms. Lupus, or lupus erythematosus, is diagnosed nine times more often in women than men; although it appears that the prognosis for men and children is worse. The true cause of lupus is still unknown, although it has been suggested that there are genetic and environmental factors that may cause the disease. Also, individuals of non-Caucasian heritage are much more likely to be diagnosed with lupus. Researchers are not sure whether this due to race, socioeconomic factors, or maybe a combination of both. Currently, there is no cure for lupus; therefore most treatment is targeted to symptoms rather than a cure. A variety of drugs are being used to prevent lupus flare-ups such as corticosteroids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and immune suppressants. Lupus is very disabling due to recurrent, gratuitous infections and flair ups, which leave the individual unable to perform daily activities for long periods including work activities. Can a disability claim be won by a claimant who has lupus? Yes. In fact many individuals who are disabled, or whose condition is near-disabling would be surprised to find that a claimant who applies for social security disability (or ssi based on a disabling condition) can win a claim and be approved for disability benefits no matter what their impairment is. Reason: because the ssd, ssi disability evaluation system used by SSA (the social security administration) is concerned with how a condition affects a claimant. The actual diagnosis can be, in many instances, relatively unimportant by comparison (though most diagnoses will automatically imply, by definition, what a person's functional limitations might reasonably be).
