Cellulitis is a condition caused by a spreading bacterial infection and its symptoms, which are similar to those of deep vein thrombosis, include chills, fever, headaches, an increase in heart rate, and a decrease in blood pressure. The extent to which cellulitis affects a person can vary significantly, but, typically, as cellulitis spreads, infected areas of the skin take on a reddish and blistery look. This appearance is the result of lymphadenitis, or inflammation of the lymph nodes. For some individuals, cellulitis affects the same areas repeatedly and when this occurs in the legs, damage to lymphatic tissue can cause a persistent or even permanent state of edema, or swelling, of the legs. This means that, for indivduals afflicted with cellulitis, the ability to work may be significantly restricted. Can cellulitis affect the outcome of a social security disability (or ssi disability) claim? The answer is yes, due solely to the fact that the social security administration's system of evaluating disablity claims takes into account the functional restrictions that are caused by a claimant's medical condition(s).
