SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY, SSI FOR BONE SPURS

Can you get ssd ssi disability for bone spurs?

Many individuals with osteophytes, or bone spurs, file claims for disability and for a very simple reason: bone spurs cause a significant degree of pain and can significantly limit an individual's range of motion and mobility.

Osteophytes are bony projections that form on joint surfaces, such as the elbows, knees, toes, feet, heels, hands, and spine and, generally, individuals affected by bone spurs have a significant amount of pain and associated joint-immobility.

Studies seem to indicate that an average person uses and replaces about twenty percent of the calcium in their bones yearly, and at this rate their bones are replaced every five years. However, individuals with arthritis and arthritic disease processes often become calcium deficient. The body begins to leach calcium from the bones and this process causes eruptions, resulting in bone spurs. Treatment of bone spurs may involve pain medication, anti inflammatory medication, or surgical removal of osteophytes.

All of this, of course, can make it quite difficult for an individual with bone spurs to successfully perform their work duties.

Can a disability claim be won on the basis of having ostephytes, or bone spurs? Well, in most cases, bone spurs are not the underlying cause of an individual's musculoskeletal problems, and, in severe instances, surgical correction may be a recommended and fully corrective option.

But, to answer the question generally, a claimant who has applied for social security disability (or ssi based on a disabling condition) can win a claim and be approved for benefits no matter what their single impairment is.

The claim evaluation process used by disability determination services (the social security administration's adjudicating arm for initial claim and disability reconsideration level cases) focuses on the restrictions and limitations a claimant has, not simply their medical diagnosis.
