Earlier this afternoon, I got a call from a social security disability claimant who found the need to check herself into a hospital during an out of state visit to relatives. When she checked herself into the hospital, she thought it was because of her severe flu symptoms. As it turned out, she didn't have the flu, but, rather, congestive heart failure and end stage renal disease. She's on dialysis now and may have to endure hemodialysis three times weekly for the rest of her life.
She was in surprisingly good spirits, though, and jokingly wondered if social security would finally award her disability benefits. I told her it was a shame she didn't get approved before her condition got this bad, but, from this point on, she shouldn't have to worry about an approval: proof of ongoing hemodialysis will always translate into an awarding of social security disability benefits.
I advised her that once the hearing office received her medical record updates from this recent hospitalization, a hearing should not be necessary and she should expect an on-the-record approval.
