SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY, SSI FOR TRIGGER POINTS

Can you get ssd ssi disability for trigger points?

Trigger points are areas on the body that, when touched, refer pain to other parts of the body. In other words, pressing on a trigger point will cause pain somewhere else.

Travell and Simon’s “Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manuel” states that at least seventy-five percent of all pain clinic patients have trigger points as their only source of pain. The same study suggests that trigger points are often misdiagnosed as sciatic pain, angina pectoris, bursitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Compression of trigger points has been known to cause referred pain, pain in the local compression area, and even motor dysfunction.

Professionals who understand the dynamics of myofascial pain and dysfunction should administer the treatment of trigger points. Treatment might involve physical therapy, acupuncture, massage, osteopaths, occupational therapists, and chiropractic therapy. Additionally, should these more conventional methods of treatment fail, injections of saline, Novocain, botox, or steroids may be administered to relieve the effects of trigger point pain. However, most studies indication low dose anesthetics are preferable to steroids or adrenalin based medications, because of the side effects associated with these medications.

Trigger points are associated with fibromyalgia or myofascial pain syndrome, a condition that is not currently recognized in the social security administration's impairment listing manual.

Unfortunately, the social security administration is lacking in its ability to properly consider the physical and psychological limitations that are brought on by persistent feelings of chronic pain.

However, those who suffer from conditions that involve trigger points may still, ultimately, win disability benefits based on their conditions and the functional restrictions that result from them.
