social security disability rsd reflex sympathetic dystrophy

SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY, SSI FOR RSD

Can you get disability for reflex sympathetic dystrophy, or rsd?

RSD, or reflex sympathetic dystrophy (also known as complex regional pain syndrome), is a disorder that seems to involve an abnormal nervous system response. The abnormality is seen in feelings of pain that are excessive and disproportionate to the cause. The symptoms of reflex sympathetic dystrophy seem mainly to manifest in an extremity, such as an arm or a leg.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy affects both men and women. However, women are more often affected by reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Most individuals with RSD are between the ages of forty and sixty. Early treatment is important, because the cure rate dramatically increases if treatment begins within the three months of the first symptoms of RSD. If treatment is delayed, permanent changes may occur in the bone and muscle of the limb, which may render the limb useless.

Currently, about fifty percent of individuals diagnosed with reflex sympathetic dystrophy are cured and nearly all diagnosed individuals improve with treatment. However, although treatment improves RSD symptoms, the condition may still be very debilitating and limiting; consequently an individual with RSD may meet the requirements of Social Security disability.

Can RSD play a role in a disability claim? Of course, but so can any disorder, condition, or impairment.

What the individual with reflex sympathetic dystrophy will need to be acutely aware of is the fact that, for conditions whose etiology, or cause, is unclear, there may be additional difficulties in winning disability benefits .

For this reason---as well as the fact that the social security administration's disability system is unclear and, to some extent, incomprehensible---it is best to learn as much as possible while pursuing a claim. To learn more about social security disability, click any of the quick links below.
