AVERAGE AMOUNT OF TIME TO GET APPROVED FOR DISABILITY BENEFITS?

It used to be easier to make predictions regarding the average amount of time it takes to get approved for disability benefits. But not any longer.

And this is simply because the average amount of time needed to get a decision on a disability application or appeal has increased and continues to increase.

The increase in the wait time for applications and appeals, of course, has to do with the horrendous backlogs in the social security administration's disability benefits system, and it is unlikely that, even with the SSA commissioner's proposals for reform, much will be done to alleviate this problem.

For this reason, if you are thinking of applying for benefits because you are disabled and unable to work, go ahead and file a claim now. Because the wait, in most cases, will be long and it will simply be better to get the process started.
