Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic severe pain condition that results from an injury to bone and soft tissue. Complex Regional Pain Syndrome is divided into two types that depend on the presence of a nerve lesion. Type I, also known, as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) does not involve an apparent lesion on the nerve, however Type II has an obvious nerve lesion. Additionally, there is a third type for which no other disorder can explain the severity of pain and functional problems. Unfortunately, the cause for all three types of CRPS is not known. The type of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome an individual has determines the symptomology an individual experiences. Treatment options for complex regional pain syndrome may involve the use of antidepressants, corticosteriods, anesthetic injections, physical therapy and surgical intervention.
