The length of time a Social Security disability appeal or SSI appeal takes to process depends upon many things. If you are filing a reconsideration appeal, your processing time will most likely be relatively short. The reconsideration is processed at the same state disability agency as your initial disability claim, and the disability agency will just send for any new treatment notes listed on your reconsideration paperwork. If you have no new treatment notes listed in your reconsideration (in other words, if you have not indicated any recent doctor or hospital visits on your reconsideration appeal form), your reconsideration will be decided by the medical treatment notes that are currently in the file, which would include everything that was obtained during the processing of your initial disability application. Unfortunately, if your social security disability appeal or SSI appeal is a hearing request (you are not allowed to request a disability hearing until your case has been denied at the application level, and also at the reconsideration level), your processing time will be much longer due to significant backlogs at Social Security hearing offices across the nation. There are no time limits set for the processing of disability claims at any appeal level, as there are so many factors that affect the timely processing of Social Security disability appeals. However, it is generally the case in many parts of the country that, after requesting a disability hearing, a claimant may be forced to wait a year or longer to actually have a hearing scheduled. For this reason, a claimant should probably consider locating representation if their case is about to proceed to the hearing level, simply to allow for the best preparation for what, in one sense, is a "one shot deal". In some cases, of course, claimants will also benefit from representation at the earlier levels of the system, and this is particularly true if neurological or mental deficits are part of a disability claimant's application.
