Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is classified as a herpes-family virus, which is spread through close contact. Most adult individuals have been exposed to the virus and remain asymptomatic. However, for those who become symptomatic the most common manifestation of the Epstein- Barr virus is infectious mononucleosis (kissing disease). This is a self-limiting form of the EBV, meaning that it usually runs its course within a couple of months. Symptoms for Epstein-Barr virus include sore throat, fever, swollen lymph glands, extreme fatigue, and general discomfort. Unfortunately, Epstein-Barr is a virus; therefore it is not treatable with any type of antibiotic. Treatment for Epstein-Barr usually involves over the counter medications to help with sore throat and fever. Additionally, an individual should stay hydrated and get plenty of bed rest. For a few individuals the primary infectious mononucleosis does not end within six months. The condition becomes chronic Epstein-Barr virus which may be a cause of chronic fatigue syndrome.
