The Social Security Administration offers two disability programs under which a disabled person may file for disability benefits in Missouri. The first program is Social Security Disability, often referred to as SSD or SSDI. This program is open to individuals who have become "insured" for disability benefits as a result of their work activity. The second program is SSI, which stands for supplemental security income. SSI benefits are available to individuals in Missouri who do not qualify for social security disability, or who qualify for SSD, but are only eligible to receive a very low benefit amount.
In either case, however, most disability claims in Missouri (either for social security disability or ssi disability) are denied at the initial application and reconsideration appeal level. And, for most claimants, this will usually mean that a hearing will need to be held before a judge if a claimant hopes to be approved for continuing disability benefits.
Of course, going to a disability hearing in Missouri without an attorney to represent you is seldom wise, due to the complexity of the federal disability claim system. And, in fact, many disability applicants will benefit from the assistance of a lawyer at even earlier steps in the process (such as the first denial or the filing of the first appeal).
If you need legal assistance on a social security disability claim in Missouri, you may wish to complete the evaluation form indicated at the top of this page. Another method to find representation includes enlisting your State Bar. Bar organizations typically keep a statewide list of attorneys and their areas of practice (including bankruptcy law, divorce law, personal injury law, and traffic law)
Additionally, bar groups can help disability claimants find legal representation for their needs through the use of a lawyer locater program.
To find the best qualified legal representation for your case---in addition to using the standard means such as searching directories, relying on good referrals, and searching online---this is sometimes a beneficial option.
Though these offices are essentially just a means of referral, after gathering detailed information from you, they can, in some instances, assist you in finding help.
