The drug, Zyloprim, also known as Aloprim and Allopurinol, is used to treat gout by reducing uric acid
production and, consequently, urate crystal formation in joints and connective tissue.
These urate crystals, of course, are the source of pain, inflammation and decreased range of motion in the affected areas of gout sufferers. And, in fact, gout is sometimes referred to as "crystalline arthritis".
Zyloprim, aka allopurinol, is not used to stop gout attacks that are in progress, but can, over a long period, help reduce the symptomology of gout.
