Ulcers are often recorded by claimants on applications or appeal forms for disability benefits. In most cases, the ulcers cited by claimants refer to the peptic variety. Peptic ulcers are usually found in the stomach (gastric ulcers), esophagus, or duodenum. Bacteria known as helicobactor pylori often cause gastric and duodenal ulcers and,in fact, medical studies indicate that sixty percent of gastric ulcers and ninety percent of duodenal ulcers are caused by this particular bacterium. Additionally studies have indicated that at least some type of bacterial infection causes seventy five percent of all ulcers. Although current medical opinion supports a bacterial cause to most ulcers, psychological factors such as stress may play a role in triggering the ulcer or possibly hindering treatment. Symptoms of ulcers may include abdominal pain, nausea, bloating, hematemesis, and gastric or duodenal perforation. If an individual is diagnosed with a gastric or duodenal perforation immediate surgery will be required and most bleeding ulcers will require cauterizing or injections to stop bleeding. Individual with less severe symptoms are often treated with antacids, antibiotics (bacterial based), and medication to prevent the formation of ulcers due to the use of NSAID s. As with many conditions, of course, ulcers alone will not typically win a disability case. However, most individuals with ulcers are also affected by other medical or psychological conditions. The important thing for a disability applicant or appellant to remember is this: a claimant who files for disability will have all of their impairments considered when their claim for benefits is evaluated. This includes ulcers, as well as headaches, muscle spasms, and , perhaps a thousand other complaints and symptoms.
