Trigger finger is a condition that is caused by irritation of the sheath covering the flexor tendons of the finger. This irritation results in inflammation, or swelling, of the tendon which then causes the finger to lock in place. Individuals who seek immediate treatment to resolve trigger finger will have a better prognosis for full recovery. Initially treatment may include occupational therapy, corticosteroid injections, or splinting to reduce the swelling caused by constant triggering of the affected finger. If conservative measures do not resolve the trigger finger, the condition may have to be resolved with minor surgery. Although trigger finger is usually curable, some individuals may continue to have problems. Also, individuals with jobs that require the use of vibrating tools or repetitive movements may not be able to continuing performing their jobs because of this condition. Trigger finger is not a condition that will ordinarily result in an approval for social security disability benefits. However, trigger finger may result in the determination that an individual is uanble to return to their past work, particularly if their past work was reliant on dexterous finger movements.
