SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY, SSI FOR REFLUX

Can you get ssd ssi disability for reflux?

Reflux, as known as acid indigestion, gerd, and gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a disorder in which the contents of the stomach backup, or reflux, from the stomach into the esophagus and even into the mouth. Reflux is a painful, inflammatory disorder that can lead, over time, to damage of the esophagus. Reflux can also be a trigger for asthma attacks.

Although gastric reflux is a common disorder, it may indicate or be related to other more serious medical conditions. For instance, reflux may be an indictor of Barrett’s Esophagus, which is a type of dysplasia that may evolve into esophageal cancer.

Reflux is also associated with laryngitis, pulmonary fibrosis, asthma, earaches, chronic cough, or ulcerated vocal cords. Consequently, although reflux is not generally considered a disability it is associated with more serious medical conditions. Therefore reflux in tandem with other medical problems may result in an allowance for Social Security disability benefits.

In fact, it is not at all uncommon for disability claimants to list difficulties with reflux on their social security disability or ssi disability application for benefits.

In essence, any claimant who applies for social security disability (or ssi disability based on a disabling condition) can win a claim and be approved for benefits no matter what their medical problem is.

This is simply because the ssd, ssi disability system used by the social security administration has an emphasis not on a claimant's specific disability, but rather an emphasis on the functional limitation's that result from the individual's medical condition. Of course, this applies to reflux as well.
