SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY, SSI FOR PNEUMONIA

Can you get ssd ssi disability for pneumonia?

Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs resulting from an infection caused by a bacterium or virus. An individual suffering from pneumonia often has the following symptoms: shortness of breath, muscle pain and stiffness, and fever and chills.

Pneumonia may also be caused by chemical or physical injury to the lungs, as well as other conditions such as alcohol abuse, lung cancer, other chronic lung disorders, or AIDS. The prognosis for an individual with pneumonia depends upon the underlying cause of the disease.

Pneumonia is a very serious condition as it is one of the leading causes of death of the elderly and individuals with chronic medical conditions. Statistics show that approximately one out of twenty cases of pneumonia in the United States will be fatal, and if the pneumonia progresses to bacteremia (poisoning of the blood), the mortality rate increases to one out of every five cases.

Though it may be surprising to some, a large number of claimants list pneumonia on their disability applications. However, this is logical since pneumonia often accompanies other respiratory complaints such as bronchitis.

Can a person win a social security disability claim simply because they've had pneumonia? It's not likely in most cases. However, it does happen. And, of course, the occurrence of pneumonia may point to the general respiratory deficiencies of a claimant.

As it's been stated many times on this site, the disability program run by the social security administration is concerned not with a claimant's diagnosed conditions, but rather with the effect those conditions have on a claimant's ability to work.
