SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY, SSI FOR HIGH CHOLESTEROL

Can you get ssd ssi disability for high cholesterol?

The impairment listing manual used by social security does not specifically address high cholesterol; however, many disability claimants list this condition on their disability applications and rightly so.

High cholesterol levels can directly lead to the development of cholesterol containing plaques on arterial walls. These plaques may form obstructions that begin to decrease the flow of oxygenated blood to the heart and, as a result, an individual may develop ischemic heart disease and eventually suffer a heart attack.

Healthy cholesterol levels should be under 200, and levels over 240 are considered to be high. Cholesterol is carried by lipoproteins once it dissolves in the blood stream. Lipoproteins are divided into two types: low and high-density lipoproteins.

If an individual has more high-density lipoproteins (good cholesterol), they are likely to be healthier, because low-density lipoproteins are associated with coronary artery disease. Unfortunately, high cholesterol, like other diseases such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, and diabetes often go untreated resulting in irreversible damage to the body.

Should an individual who has been diagnosed with high cholesterol consider filing for disability? If the cumulative effect of their medical conditions significantly affects their ability to work, yes.

Fortunately, the disability evaluation system used by the social security administration is not strictly concerned with a claimant's specific diagnosis, but rather with the functional limitation's which result from an individual's overall medical condition.

Essentially, if a claimant's physical (or mental) limitations are great enough, a case can be won regardless of the actual conditions for which a claimant has been diagnosed.
