A heart attack is the end result of arterial stenosis and ischemic heart disease. Stenosis is defined as the narrowing or constriction of a blood vessel, and ischemia refers to an inadequate supply of oxygen to the heart, typically as a result of stenosis. So, what is a heart attack? A heart attack is what happens when the heart gets so little oxygen that part of the heart muscle suffers from necrosis. That is, a portion of the heart ceases to function. How are heart attack cases evaluated by SSA? It depends on the extent of the damage caused by a heart attack, the patient's recovery, and the patient's prognosis. A person who suffers a heart attack may require a CABG, or coronary artery bypass graft. And for social security disability purposes, whether or not an individual is found to be disabled may depend on how many of their arteries require such a procedure. A person with a CABG x 1 (a single artery bypass), obviously, will have a much greater chance of reentering the workforce than an individual with a CABG x 3 (three arteries bypassed and grafted). And the reasoning behind this is clear: more extensive grafting implies more damage to the heart and less likelihood of full recovery.
