SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY, SSI FOR CARDIOVASCULAR PROBLEMS

Can you get ssd ssi disability for cardiovascular problems?

The phrase cardiovascular problems includes a wide range of medical impairments for which an individual can be considered for social security disability and ssi benefits.

The conditions that are most often cited in this area include high blood pressure, angina, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, and peripheral vascular disease.

Individuals applying for either social security disability or ssi based on disability can potentially be awarded benefits by one of two mechanisms. One is by meeting or equaling a listing (some medical conditions have specified criteria in the social security administration's impairment listing that qualify an individual for disability benefits).

The other manner in which a claimant may be found eligible for disability benefits involves a sequential evalution process that determines whether or not a person's impairment is severe, has lasted (or will last) at least twelve months in duration, and whether or not they can do their past work, or, reasonably, any other type of work.

Individuals with cardiovascular disease may be found eligible to receive disability benefits provided that their functional limitations are great enough to restrict them from working and earning at least a "certain" amount each month.

This "certain" amount is known as SGA, or substantial gainful activity. For 2007, the sga amount (which is gross/pretax) is $900.00 per month. In other words, if an individual cannot work and earn at least the SGA amount, they may qualify for disability benefits, provided they also meet the social security administration's medical eligibility critiera.
