What is the five month period and why do they hold these benefits back? Unfortunately, you've been told correctly. While an individual who is approved for social security disability can be awarded benefits back to their date of application (and up to twelve months retroactive), the social security administration will withhold five months of benefits. The "five month waiting period", as it is known, applies to all social security disability cases and, effectively, amounts to a unusual and arbitrary sort of penalty. Individuals who are approved for disability and receive ssi, by contrast, are not subject to having five months of their benefits taken from them.
