Is it true that a Veteran diagnosed with PTSD must file a claim with the VA and be turned down before they will be considered for SSI or SSD? No, it is not true at all. The VA and SSD/SSI systems are completely independent of each other in every way and at NO point during the processing of a social security disability or ssi case will the VA be involved. Of course, if an individual states on a disability application that they've been treated at a VA medical facility, then Disability Determination Services (the state-level agency that handles medical determinations for the social security administration) will be required to request the veteran's records from the facility in question. But this is no different from requesting records from Walter Reed, Womack Army Medical Center, Duke University Medical Center, or any other military or civilian source of medical treatment...with the exception that VA medical centers usually take even longer to comply with record requests than these institutions.
