This information may help claimants with representation, as well as claimants who are not represented by an attorney or non attorney representative. Understanding how the Social Security Disability system works can make the difference between winning or not winning the continuing disability benefits and backpay to which a person is entitled. To win a claim for ongoing and past due benefits, claimants should learn about the disability process to improve their chances of winning. |

Would a fibromyalgia diagnosis by a rheumatologist help my disability case? Yes, a fibromyalgia diagnosis received from a specialist such as a rheumatologist or a chronic pain specialist will generally carry more weight than a similar diagnosis received from a general practioner. This simply the case because fibromyalgia, like adhd, is a medical condition that is frequently (and sometimes casually) diagnosed by GP's. Unfortunately, this has the effect of diluting the overall strength of a fibromyalgia diagnosis. On the other hand, a fibromyalgia diagnosis rendered by a specialist in such areas will be seen to have a stamp of authority, and, consequently, will carry more weight. This is particularly true for cases that are to be heard at disability hearings before ALJ's. Regarding the lack of health/medical insurance...unfortunately, this is the bane of many disability claimants. Having been out of work for quite some, many, if not most, claimants, by the time they enter the appeals phase of the disability evaluation process, will find it somewhat difficult to obtain proper medical treatment. And, of course, such situations present themselves as a terrible catch-22. For without health insurance, claimants are hard pressed to get regular treatment from which medical records will later be derived. Yet without sufficient medical record documentation, a case becomes substantially more difficult for a claimant to win. Claimants who lack medical insurance often have few treatment options. But among these are emergency room treatment at taxpayer-supported hospitals, health departments, and whatever free clinics may exist in a claimant's area.
