APPEALS FOR DISABILITY

The information links provided on this page primarily concern the subject of SSI and Social security disability appeals. However, other sections of this site also contain information and tips regarding SSA disability appeals, and these page may be accessed via the menu near the bottom of the page.

According to national statistics, roughly 30 percent of all individuals filing for federal disability benefits (SSI and/or Social security disability) are denied. Of course, this is hardly an encouraging statistic for anyone who has become disabled and finds that they will have initiate a disability claim. To make matters worse, in many states, the actual denial rates on basic applications and appeals are substantially worse than the national figures.

Having said that, it should be painfully obvious that most people who truly need disability benefits will be forced to enter the SSA appeals process. How difficult is this process? Fortunately, in many cases, a claimant who has been denied on an application can later be approved on an appeal ( this is particularly true when it comes to cases that are heard by judges).

Unfortunately, however, the appeals process can take an extraordinarily long length of time. In fact, getting to a disability hearing can take well over a year after such a hearing has been requested. As always, of course, claimants will probably do better by learning as much as possible about the disability appeals process, and, in many--if not most--cases, getting qualified representation to assist them with their claim.
