To better help their Social Security Disability cases, Claimants should do the following:
- Stay knowledgeable as to the status of their social security claim. For either a social security disability or ssi disability case, this can be done by making periodic calls to the examiner assigned to the case at DDS (Disability Determination Services). If the case is pending a request for hearing before an Administrative Law Judge, a status check can be done by calling the Office of Hearings and Appeals. * Represented claimants, however, should probably have their attorney or non attorney representative handle status checks for them.
- Make sure all deadlines are met. This is extremely important in all areas. For example, if a disability examiner sends a letter to a claimant requesting a call back within a certain number of days, a claimant should strive to make the call as soon as possible. If a denial letter has been received and a claimant has 60 days in which to submit the first, or next, appeal, then, by all means, a claimant should submit the necessary paperwork before the deadline arrives.
- Keep both the disability Examiner and the disability Representative, if there is one, up-to-date on recent medical treatment. Keeping an attorney or non attorney representative updated, and keeping a disability examiner (or judge, if the case is at the hearing office) fully updated, can sometimes have a substantial impact on the development of an ssd or ssi claim.
- Report all information changes (address/ph#) to Social Security and a Disability Representative (attorney or non attorney) immmediately. Whether the changes involve a change in treatment sources, diagnoses, or simply a change of residence or contact numbers, always keep the individuals involved in your social security disability or ssi case updated.
