Generally, Social Security does not send you to a medical examination if you have current medical treatment notes that address your medical and/or mental impairments. However, if you do not have any medical treatment or your medical treatment has been more than three months prior to filing for disability, you will probably be scheduled for a consultative examination to evaluate your medical conditions. Even if you have current medical treatment notes, you may be scheduled for specific types of consultative examinations to further evaluate the severity of your impairments. For instance, some individuals are scheduled for neurological or orthopedic consultative examinations in an effort to ascertain their residual functional capacity. Unfortunately, consultative examinations are a one-time event with a physician who is not familiar with you or the effect your conditions have upon your everyday life.
