Many of you wonder who makes Social Security medical determinations. A “team” consisting of disability examiners and unit physicians makes Social Security medical evaluations. The unit physicians are trained medical professionals such as psychologists, pediatricians, orthopedists, psychiatrists, general practitioners, etc. However, disability examiners have to be trained to make Social Security disability medical determinations. How are the disability examiners trained to make these medical determinations? Each disability examiner completes a medical training course that is designed to familiarize them with medical terminology and Social Security disability rules and regulations. The medical determination provided by the state disability agency is based upon your medical treatment notes, work history, age, education, and a consultative examination if necessary (consultative examinations are performed by physicians hired by the state disability agency). If you do not have current medical and/or mental health treatment in the three months prior to filing your Social Security disability claim, it is likely that you will be scheduled for a consultative examination. Remember the state disability agency has no direct contact with your treating physicians; consequently your physician's medical treatment notes are very important. Review your physicians’ treatment notes before you file for disability so that you are familiar with your physicians’ comments regarding your conditions. Many individuals are surprised by the comments their physicians record in their treatment notes.
