Social Security evaluates neurological problems in the same way it evaluates all other medical and, or, mental impairments. Social Security is concerned with residual functional capacity; therefore if your neurological problems are preventing you from walking, talking, and other daily physical activities, or are impairing your mental abilities (such as comprehension and memory), your may be a potential disability allowance (i.e. you may possibly be approved for social security disability or SSI disability benefits). How will the social security administration evaluate your disability claim if you have neurological deficits? SSA may acquire a neurological consultative examination to further augment any medical treatment notes that have been submitted by you or your disability attorney, or that have been obtained directly by a disability examiner or disability judge. A disability examination such as this would be scheduled for you and would be paid for by SSA. The exam itself would be conducted by a private physician, generally in your immediate area, who has agreed to perform such services for social security. Provided your neurological problems are severe enough to meet a disability guidebook listing, or prevent you from having enough residual functional capacity to engage in substantial work activity, you may an allowance for Social Security disability or SSI. Please note that if your neurological problems are the result of epilepsy or a seizure disorder, or the result of a stroke, your eligibility for disability will be considered under specific disability criteria.
