Social Security will not call you or send you any letters regarding the status of your Social Security disability claim until a decision has been made. The state disability agency may send out requests for information or consultative exam scheduling letters (consultative exams, or CE exams, are what many people refer to as a social security medical examination). However, they are not in the business of sending out routine status reports on disability claims. That being said, you may call your local Social Security office or the Social Security toll free number at anytime during the disability process to request a status on your disability claim. Although, most of the time Social Security will only be able to verify that your claim is still being processed at the state disability agency (disability determination services in most states) or that a decision has been made. Of course, if you have heard nothing from Social Security regarding your SSD or SSI claim within a couple months after you file your disability claim, you should call Social Security to make sure there has been no decision made. Social Security uses the postal service to send out disability decision notices, and sometimes these notices get lost. Since you have only sixty-five days in which to appeal a disability denial from the date of the notice, it is very important to know if your disability claim has been denied.
