If you miss your Social Security disability appointment, you should contact your local office or the toll free Social Security number to reschedule your appointment. Social Security will send you a closeout letter, which will establish your protected filing period. What is the protected filing period? The protected filing period for Social Security disability (SSDI) is six months from the date of the missed disability application interview. However the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program only has a two month protected filing period. Missing your protective filing period does not prevent you from filing for Social Security disability benefits. However, it may cause you to lose monetary benefits that you may have been entitled to receive had you filed your disability claim within the protective filing period. Therefore, for this reason, if you miss your appointment to be interviewed for a disability claim, you should contact the social security office where your appointment was scheduled immediately.
