Social Security disability psychological consultants may be psychologists or psychiatrists, and are considered to be experts in the evaluation of the existence and severity of an individual’s mental impairment, according to the rules and regulations of the Social Security disability process. Psychological consultants review mental residual function reports (MRFC) and provide advice to disability examiners. Additionally, a psychological consultant determines if an individual’s mental impairment meets or equals a Social Security disability listing, and basically determines the severity of the limitations caused by an individual’s mental impairment. Currently, psychological consultants review all Social Security disability claims involving mental impairments.
