WHAT IS THE STATE SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY AGENCY ?

The Social Security Administration provides funding for disability agencies in each state, for the purpose of making medical determinations for Social Security disability and Supplemental Security Income disability. Some states have one disability agency while others have more than one disability agency.

What function does the state disability agency provide? State disability agencies process Social Security disability claims (SSI and SSDI) to the point of rendering a medical decision. What happens when a Social Security disability claim is sent to the state disability agency? Each disability claim is receipted into the state disability agency, and dispersed among the various processing units within the agency. Once a disability claims examiner has received your disability claim, the examiner will send for all of your listed medical source records.

While waiting on your medical records, the disability examiner may send you some function reports to complete or ask you to attend a consultative examination with a Social Security physician. Should the state disability examiner determine that you need a consultative examination, you will be contacted by phone or mail to schedule the examination.

What are the reasons for consultative exams? Consultative exams are usually scheduled if an individual does not have current medical treatment (within the past three months) or the individual’s medical records do not address their medical and/or mental impairments thoroughly enough for a Social Security medical determination.

When the disability examiner ascertains that there is enough information to process your Social Security disability claim to a decision, the disability examiner will write a medical and/or mental decisional write up. In most cases, a disability agency unit physician will review the disability examiner’s write up before signing off on the disability examiner’s medical determination. Once a disability medical determination has been made, the disability claim file is returned to the jurisdiction of the individual’s local Social Security Administration office.
