It is not unusual for disability claimants to remark that nothing has happened on their social security disability or SSI claim. Very often, it goes like this: "I applied for social security disability five months ago and haven't heard anything yet". And sometimes, the remark goes like this: "I requested a disability hearing over a year ago and haven't been given a date yet". Unfortunately, neither of these two situations are unusual. When it comes to filing an application for social security disability, there is no deadline for the social security administration to meet. Thus, a disability application can take a few weeks to decide, or a decision can take as long as half a year (on average, though, most claimants will receive a notice of decision within 3-4 months after applying). In the case of hearing requests (a disability hearing before a federal judge is the second appeal step that is available to social security disability and SSI claimants who have been denied benefits), the possible scenarios are even worse. From the time a disability hearing has been requested until the time that a hearing date has been scheduled, one to two years (depending on which part of the country you live in) may have passed. It would be nice, of course, if the social security administration provided a system of periodically supplying claimants with the current status of their disability application or disability appeal (for example, reconsiderations, reviews, and hearings). However, this is not something that is currently built into the system, though, in the relative near future, it may be. How do you obtain the status of your social security disability or SSI disability claim? The following page provides information regarding this topic: Social Security Disability Status.
