Not everyone is aware of it, but SSA (the social security administration) offers more than just retirement benefits. They also offer disability benefits through two separate programs. The first program is called social security disability and it is often referred to as SSD or SSDI (social security disability insurance) and also as DIB (disability insurance benefits). Social security disability is designed to provide disability benefits to individuals who are not able to work as a result of a medical or mental condition, the limitations of which make it impossible to adequately perform the duties of any jobs done in the past, or perform the duties of any other suitable forms of work. The second SSA program that offers disability benefits is called SSI. SSI stands for supplemental security income and it is administered in exactly the same fashion as social security disability. That is, an application for disability benefits is taken and, after a person's medical records have been obtained and evaluated, a decision is made as to whether or not a person is disabled according to SSA disability standards. If the person's records indicate that this is so, the individual will be awarded disability benefits. If the individual is denied, they may choose to accept the denial, start over with a new application, or file an appeal (nearly always the better choice). In all regards, applying for SSI disability is indistinguishable from filing from social security disability. In fact, you cannot even discern the difference since the process is exactly the same for SSI and SSD.
