To file for SSD (social security disability) is fairly simple. To get the application process started, just contact the social security administration and advise them that you wish to file a disability application. Whether your disability application will be for SSD or SSI (supplemental security income), will be determined by the claims rep who takes your claim). After you make this initial contact, assuming you do so by phone, you will be given an appointment to be interviewed. You can be interviewed at a social security office, or even over the phone as a matter of convenience. How do you contact the social security administration so you may file for SSD? There are at least three different ways to do this: 1. You can call the social security administration on their toll free line. 2. You can contact the social security office closest to where you actually live. 3. You can apply for disability online by going to the social security administration's website at ssa.gov Of all these options, option no. 1 is probably the worst, simply because so much bad information is routinely given out through the social security administration's toll free services. Option no. 3 may be acceptable to many; however, you can only file for social security disability (SSD) online). You cannot apply for SSI disability benefits online. Also, if you file online you will not have the opportunity to ask questions as you begin the disability application process. Option no. 2 (contacting your local social security office) generally works best for most people and for these reasons: 1. you are speaking with the office that will, most likely, handle your claim, and 2. you can get out of the way whatever questions about filing for disability that you may have.
