The reconsideration phase of the social security disability and ssi disability process is nearly identical to the initial application phase. The only real difference is that a claimant's case is assigned to a different disability examiner--a recon, or reconsideration, examiner. The reconsideration is simply a second look at a disability claimant's benefit application. And, much more often than not, such appeals are denied. As of this writing, reconsiderations are still in place; however, it is the intent of the social security administration's commissioner to eventually do away with the reconsideration step.
