No, unfortunately, this is one of those myths about social security disability and SSI disability that seems to get passed along in forums---and will probably get passed along for as long as these programs exist. Simply put, there is no rule that provides for the automatic denial of SSD and SSI disability claims. In fact, nationally about three out of ten disability claims are approved at the basic application level. However, a 30 percent approval rate also means a 70 percent denial rate, and this is exactly why this myth gets repeated. The thirty percent of claimants who are approved will never have to deal with an appeals process that takes, in many cases, years. The seventy percent of claimant who are denied, on the other hand, will have to endure months of waiting to receive a decision on their first appeal, and many months of waiting on a request for a disability hearing (the second appeal).
